World Book Day is a global celebration of books and reading. It is an opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading and to encourage people to discover the pleasures of books. Pink Tower International School in Nairobi decided to have their own Book Day on the 2nd of February 2023, and it was a fantastic day full of exciting activities.
The day started with the children coloring bookmarks. The bookmarks were all different shapes and sizes, and the children had a great time decorating them with a variety of colors and patterns. They were able to express their creativity and personalize their bookmarks to make them unique.
After the coloring session, it was time for some games. The first game was “Guess the Character.” The children were given clues about characters from traditional stories, and they had to guess who the character was. The second game was “Who am I?” where the children were given a character from a traditional story and had to act out the character for their classmates to guess. The games were a great way to engage the children and test their knowledge of traditional stories.
Next, it was time for story time. The children were given some time to read their favorite books around the school. Some children chose to read outside under the trees, while others found a quiet corner in the library. It was great to see the children taking time to enjoy reading their favorite books.
After story time, the children were introduced to the concept of book reviews. They were given a worksheet to fill in, where they could write about their favorite books and what they liked about them. This was a great way to encourage the children to think critically about the books they had read and to share their opinions with their classmates.
The next activity was the “Favorite Character” worksheet. The children had to choose their favorite character from a traditional story and write about why they liked the character. This activity allowed the children to think more deeply about the characters in the stories they had read and to share their opinions with their classmates.
The final activity of the day was the “Character Miniature Sticking” and “Fashion Show.” The children were given miniature cutouts of their favorite characters and had to stick them onto a cardboard sheet. Once the characters were stuck onto the cardboard, the children had to create a small stage for their character and design a costume for them. The children then had to present their character and costume to the rest of the class. It was a great way to encourage creativity and imagination.
